The car battery is referred to automotive battery. It is a rechargeable type of battery that supplies the electrical energy to the vehicle. The main purpose is to provide necessary power to the engine to start the vehicle. In most of the condition the battery wire get hot or the terminal get hot lead to battery damages. in this blog post I am finding some reason for the battery getting hot.

The main function of car battery

Starting the engine, the 12 V or 24 V battery is required to start the engine of the vehicle. In most of the small vehicle, the 12 V battery is enough but in heavy vehicles 24 V batteries are using.

The second function of the battery is powering the electrical system in the vehicle, most of the lights sound and music player working using the DC source so the batteries are dependent.

Types of car batteries

There are two type of batteries available in the car, that are lead acid batteries, and lithium ion batteries. The lead acid batteries are most common type of battery found in the car. This type of battery low cost comparing with lithium iron batteries.

The lithium ion batteries are most commonly used in electric vehicle such as EV vehicle and hybrid vehicles. This batteries has the properties of high energy storing capacity and lightweight.

Why car battery getting too hot?

The car battery getting hot. This will damage the battery and also reduce the lifespan. This may also some potential damage to the car. Here are some common reason why your car battery getting overheat?

  • Overcharging
  • Internal short circuit
  • High Electrical load
  • Poor ventilation
  • Faulty battery
  • Corroded or loose connection

Overcharging of the battery

Over charging is the main issue happening in most of the condition this will cause the battery to overheat. When the alternator or external charger supplying the too much voltage the battery this will cause the electrolyte to boil. This will generating excessive heat leading to the battery, swelling or leakage. To resolve this issue check the alternator voltage regulator and confirm that it functioning correctly.

The wiring inside the car is very complex sometime the electrical wiring it shorted, and this make the battery to drain quickly. Sometime the defected battery itself get internal sword circuit. This will cause rapid heating of the battery and reduce the lifespan to resort this issue you must replace the old battery with new one.

High electrical load connected with the battery

If you are connecting an external amplifier or external fog light to the car battery, this may cause the overload to the battery. The excessive use of Electrical And equipment inside a car makes the battery to drain quick. Overwork of battery makes overheat. To resort this issue, reduce the electrical load or ensure that the engine is running when using high power devices like power, amplifier or fog lamp.

Poor ventilation

The battery needs adequate ventilation. Otherwise, the battery may get overheat, to solve this problem ensure to provide a proper ventilation in the battery compartment.

Corroded or loose connection of battery wires

In most of the situation, the battery terminal get hot due to loose contact of the connecting wires. When the connecting wires are loose contact this makes spark between the battery contact and wire. This will make too much heat at the battery junction. If you are not rectify this issue, this may cause firing inside your car. Dissolve this issue clean and tighten the battery terminal regularly. Use good quality copper clamp to connect with battery.
